Cristiano Ronaldo rises above the criticism for Portugal at Euro 2016

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two and set up the other in Portugal’s 3-3 draw with Hungary as they scraped their way into the knockout stages of Euro 2016. Adam Bate was in Lyon to see Ronaldo rise above the criticism once again

There were about 10 minutes remaining in the first half when the chant went up from a small section of the Hungary support. Cristiano Ronaldo's sexuality was being questioned. The first thought was of the vile homophobia. The second was that the tone of triumphalism had come too soon. Ronaldo had plenty of time for a response

That was particularly ironic given his efforts in front of goal in the first half. Ronaldo's desperation appeared directly linked to his waning faith in his team-mates with a series of free-kicks and long-range shots fired in from increasingly unlikely angles. His exasperation was obvious when Hungary went 2-1 up just after the break.

What was written on the mysterious note passed to Cristiano Ronaldo during Portugal v Hungary?

Quite a lot of strange things happened during Portugal v Hungary.
(Dare to) Zoltan scored an absolute humdinger of a volley at the ripe old age of 37 for starters.
Then there were four goals in 15 batshit mental second-half minutes to make us all remember what fun a high-scoring match could be.

But none of that was a patch on a curious incident in the 70th minute

With Portugal level again at 3-3, Benfica defender Eliseu appeared to turn carrier pigeon by delivering a mysterious note from the bench to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo breaks Euro record to save Portugal in Group F

1. Cristiano Ronaldo arrives at the Euros to save Portugal
Rumours of Cristiano Ronaldo's demise were premature. Heavily criticised around the world for his petulant comments after drawing 1-1 with Iceland, taunted and jeered when ineffectual against Austria, Portugal's captain issued a devastating response. With two goals, one assist and an increasingly inspirational performance, he rallied his nation against a relentless Hungarian side and dragged them to the next stage of the competition.
His double to save his country from the brink of elimination was outstanding -- and record breaking. He's the first player to score at four European Championships.
Earlier in the day, Ronaldo had tossed a reporters' microphone into a lake, a forthright way to signal that he was in no mood for distractions. Other Portuguese reporters, careful to keep their equipment safe, had noted that he looked despondent in training this week and when he started the game slowly, their worst fears appeared to have been realised.
Marked tightly by Adam Lang, he found it hard to break free and when he did, he encountered heavy treatment. He was chopped to the ground as early as the fifth minute by Roland Juhasz and it wasn't the last time. His frustrations were exposed just moments later when Nani broke on the right, but failed to get a cross away before the ball went out for a corner. Ronaldo was furious, spinning on the spot and roaring with rage.
Free kicks were, once again, a sore point. His first was driven into the shin pads of the Hungarian wall. The second was better, but well saved by Gabor Kiraly. The third was simply high and wide. But then came the lightbulb moment. Instead of trying to do everything on his own, Ronaldo slipped a perfectly weighted ball through to Nani, who redeemed himself by driving it past Kiraly at the near post. In that instant, Ronaldo seemed to be renewed. And how his country needed him.
Trailing 2-1 in the early stage of the second half, Joao Mario burst down the right flank and curled in a low cross. The ball fizzed in at pace, but at a less-than-helpful angle. No matter. Ronaldo flicked it behind his standing leg into the bottom corner. It was an astonishing goal.
Hungary, pugnacious and unwilling to accept a role as supporting actors, responded and regained the lead. But Ronaldo wasn't giving up either. When Ricardo Quaresma joined the fray, it didn't take him long to make an impression.
His cross from the left was perfect. Ronaldo's leap was supernatural. His deft header drew the scores level. Ronaldo is back.

Cristiano Ronaldo might visit Singapore in July

SINGAPORE: A visit to Singapore could be on the cards for Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
Channel NewsAsia understands that the Portuguese winger is due here on a private visit in July, although his schedule has not been confirmed.
The trip also depends on his country's performance in the Euro 2016 football tournament. Portugal face Group C leaders Hungary on early Thursday morning (Jun 23) in a must-win match for a spot in the last 16.
The three-time Ballon d'Or winner last visited Singapore in 2013, where he made a surprise visit to Crest Secondary School as an ambassador for the Singapore Olympic Foundation - Peter Lim scholarship. Ronaldo is a friend of the Singapore billionaire and his image rights are also owned by Mr Lim's Hong Kong-based Mint Media

Euro 2016: Cristiano Ronaldo throws reporter's microphone into lake

The journalist who had his microphone thrown in a lake by Cristiano Ronaldo believes negative press might have been the reason for his reaction.
Diogo Torres of CMTV tried to conduct a live interview with the Portugal forward early on Wednesday when the incident happened. The squad were preparing for their final Group F game against Hungary later in the day.
"I asked Ronaldo if he was prepared for the match," Torres told BBC Sport. "He didn't answer. He grabbed my mic and threw it into the lake.
"I'm not sure why he did it. I think it was a momentary thing. I think he would not have done it if he had thought about it.
"We are a TV channel of a major newspaper in Portugal. We produce a lot of news about him. Some of it he doesn't like. Perhaps that's why he did it. But it wasn't a personal thing.
"I've not had an apology from Ronaldo or the team. We travelled to France on the same plane with the players and will fly back with them.

Euro 2016: What's wrong with Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo?

Goalless, frustrated, angry - the mood of Cristiano Ronaldo has matched the weather so far here in Paris; the odd sliver of sunshine, but lots of rain.
On Saturday, the night of his record 128th appearance for his country - passing the tally of Luis Figo - the Real Madrid forward failed to break down Austria, with a missed second-half penalty capping his misery.
The captain had 10 shots at goal in all against the Austrians, with only three of them on target. That brought Ronaldo up to 20 goal attempts so far this tournament - which is more than either of their group rivals Hungary (18) or Iceland (12) have managed in their two games to date.
Portugal are third in Group F and in danger of exiting the tournament before facing Hungary in Lyon on Wednesday - but will they be able to rely on Ronaldo to get them through?
